John Goulding Swift, a native of Lake Charles and graduate of LSU, moved to Lafayette in 1981 after receiving a Juris Doctorate from the LSU Law Center and serving as a law clerk for U. S. District Judge Edwin Hunter in Lake Charles. He and his partner formed Swift & Rhoades, LLP in 2001 where John focuses on civil litigation in Southwest Louisiana representing individuals as well as retailers, the City of Lafayette, oil field businesses, automobile dealerships, churches and other concerns. He handles personal injury and property damage cases as well as employment and business disputes. His hard earned experience and success in the court room has earned him the respect of his peers and the judiciary.
John is active in bettering the legal community, having served as President of the Louisiana State Bar Foundation and President of the Lafayette Parish Bar Association. He has devoted time to various committees of the Lafayette and Louisiana Bar Associations and Foundations and also is a member of the Louisiana Association of Defense Council. He has conducted seminars for his peers on premises liability and other legal topics.
An active servant for his church, John has served as President of the Board of Trustees and chair of several committees of Northwood UMC in Upper Lafayette, as well as its legal counsel. Currently he serves on the Administrative Board of Asbury United Methodist Church as Vice-Chair. He has been an active advocate of stewardship in his capacities at both churches. Other civic endeavors include serving as President of the American Cancer Society (Lafayette Division) and as a long time President of Hidden Hills Community.
A lover of the outdoors, John is never happier than at the start of hunting season where he has the opportunity to commune with nature, watch the sun rise over the horizon, drop a few birds and watch his dog retrieve the bounty. He keeps a rigid schedule of working out daily to maintain fitness and health which he values highly. He is the husband of Jan, father of Taylor and Kelly, and the adoptive father of Casper the golden retriever, and Phoebe and Katie, “the rescue puppies.” His mother, Betty Swift, recently turned 91 and she has been blessed to have John as her devoted son. His father, Judge G. William Swift, Jr. served with distinction for years in Lake Charles as a 14th Judicial District Court Judge and as a Judge for the Louisiana Third Circuit Court of Appeal.
John recently became a dues paying member of Upper Lafayette, but not many know that he has supported the foundation since January 2008 when Jan became Executive Director. Opening his law firm offices for the cause, our foundation was housed at his law firm and took full advantage of the copier, postage machine, office supplies, phones, and computers, all rent and cost free! John, we are indebted to you and proud to welcome you as a member!
